Chapter Eight
Dalton
I STEP through the front door of the old building, located in the seedier parts of Artona and bite my cheek so I wonât accidentally spew out the expletives filtering through my brain. This place smells rotten, like more than one person died here. Within the last few days, as well. Iâve never been to a more ominous place. But I guess that comes with the territory.
I continue further inside, my fingers curled around the hilt of my sword. Everything is covered in cobwebs or dust. The few pieces of furniture here have sheets thrown over them. I turn to my father, sure my face must convey exactly what Iâm thinking.
âAre you sure this is the right place?â
He gives me a jerky nod of his head. Heâs liking this place even less than I am if his drawn sword is anything to go by. Mine is still in its sheath on my hip and thatâs only because Iâm more confident in my magic than my father is in his. Something just seems off about this place. It would be perfect for an ambush.
âYou know what to look for,â my father says.
I dip my chin in confirmation and start searching the side opposite of my father. Two chairs are placed in the corner with sheets over them. I lift the sheet from one chair and promptly sneeze due to the dust that rises into the air. I hold a hand in front of my mouth and nose as I check under the other sheet and around the chairs. When I find nothing of importance, I move to the next spot; a desk thatâs wobbling on a broken leg. I pull out every drawer, a pen, some paper and a broken pocket watch all I find.
I squad down to look under the desk then stand back up and move to check the sides for any hidden compartments. When I have no luck there, I move onto the wall next to it. I raise my hand to brush away the dust and quickly jerk it back when I feel cobweb underneath my fingers. I take a step back and hold my hand out towards the wall. A single flame sparks in the palm of my hand, allowing me enough light to see most of the wall.
The whole thing is covered in cobwebs. With a huff, I draw my sword so I can use it to remove the webs. There are several spiders in it, so I just cut the top part loose, making it fall down gently. I hate spiders, but my sister has instilled a deep sense of empathy in me. Unfortunately, that covers animals and therefore also spiders. Otherwise, Iâd burn the little beasts.
With no spiders hurt and the wall free of the web, I step closer. Something has been carved into the wall. I brush the last dust away with my hand and take a step back. There, on the wall, is a lily and a rose, entwined.
âOver here,â I call.
